The first step towards seeking knowledge is sincerity of intention al-Imaam Yoosuf ibn Abdil-Barr Reference: Jaami' Bayaan al-'Ilm wa Fadhlihi - Volume 1, Page 118 Category: Sayings of the Salaf 'Alee ibn al-Hasan ibn Shaqeeq said: I heard 'Abdullaah ibn al-Mubaarak[1] say: The first step towards (seeking) knowledge is the (sincerity of) intention, then it is listening, then it is understanding (this knowledge), then it is memorising (this knowledge), then it is acting (upon this knowledge), then it is spreading (this knowledge). al-Haakim said: ((Twice I travelled to (visit) at-Toosee in Toos, and I asked him when he would be free from compiling these many fataawa? So he said: I have divided the night into three (parts): A third in which I compile (fataawa), a third in which I sleep, and a third in which I read the Qur.aan.)) Siyar A'laam an-Nubalaa. - Volume 15, Page 491 Shaykhul Islaam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah said: "And if it takes place in a manner where it is to humiliate your brother and to tear up his honor and to take delight in his flesh and to bite at it and to lower his place from the hearts of the people, then this is a disease that is incurable and a fire of hassanaat (good deeds) that burns them just as fire burns up wood."
